A Game 35-Years in the Making
In 1983, while a Game Designer at Activision, I started designing a sequel game to my brother Garry's smash hit, KEYSTONE KAPERS™.
I had assumed that after having to deal with all of Harry Hooligan's shenanigans, Keystone Kelly was ready to move west and retire. He had after all been busy everyday catching Harry over and over again while he dodged shopping carts, chased bouncing beach balls, jumped over cathedral radios and ducked under flying toy airplanes. And who can ever forget those endless trips in the store elevator, up and down, down and up, up and down. Exhausting!
1983 Version of KEYSTONE KANNONBALL
Keystone and I both thought, what could be more relaxing then working outdoors and seeing the new frontier, and given our mutual love of railroading, what better way to live out his retirement days then as a conductor on an old western railroad. The GR&RR in fact. The Gold Rush Railroad wandered through the high desert of the west past flowering cactus, wild flora, majestic mountains and breathtaking sunsets. Yea, this was the life.
And so I started to design on the Atari 2600 what would become known as KEYSTONE KANNONBALL, that is until the Great Video Game Crash of 1983... Fast forward to a humid summer afternoon in June, 2018 at an offsite storage facility in New Jersey. In the darkest corner of that facility, in an unlabeled, unassuming dusty cardboard box, there it was, the KEYSTONE KANNONBALL cartridge I had made 35 years earlier which I thought was lost for all time. And though Keystone Kelly's dream of retirement never came to fruition, the cartridge I found that hot afternoon has been donated to the National Videogame Museum and the game I started years ago is finally coming to the Atari 2600 early next year as DAN KITCHEN'S GOLD RUSH!™. And Keystone Kelly? Why he's still chasing old Harry Hooligan up and down those department store escalators, and couldn't be happier!
ALL ABOARD!
FOR THE WILDEST RIDE IN THE WEST!
I haven't been this excited about a 2600 game release since I was a kid!
